Hodgson Believes Shaw Could Be Future

By Engerlund

Roy Hodgson believes that new Manchester United signing Luke Shaw could become the future of English football after making his debut against Costa Rica in the World Cup 2014. Shaw was taken to the World Cup ahead of experienced Ashley Cole. Many criticised to this decision, but against Costa Rica, who had already qualified for the knockout stages, Shaw performed extremely well and helped the England national team keep a clean sheet. This also helped them get a point from the group matches after having been defeated against Italy and Uruguay.

Shaw recently completed a £ 30 million transfer to Manchester United, which is a fee that could rise depending upon the performances of the 18-year-old. This makes him the world’s most expensive teenager beating Wayne Rooney of Manchester United. Hodgson says that he does not see the reason why Shaw could become the next Ashley Cole, who was once revered as the best left back a few years ago. Since Shaw is yet to even reach his peak, the defender could become a crucial aspect of the England national team.

Ashley Cole recently became the first left back to reach 100 caps for the national team. If Shaw continues to progress in the same way, then he could well be looking at the record of David Beckham. “I really do think Luke has got tremendous quality. I think he’s really an Ashley Cole in the making. I think the experience will do him good. Also, I think he will be a very useful player for us in games where we can use the enormous power he has going forward. We agonised over those positions, especially in the case of Luke because it involved Ashley Cole, who all of us love to bits and think is a great footballer,” said Hodgson.
