WHY WAN-BISSAKA MISSES ON ENGLAND SQUAD

By Marc

Wan-Bissaka is not available again for the Three-lions in the November fixtures. Southgate has come out to explain the reason why Manchester United full back is not on the latest England squad. England is blessed with great right-back options, and the United star remains behind his rivals in the national squad coach’s plans.

Gareth Southgate, the England Manager, said that Aaron Wan-Bissaka is not in his team as he is still a step behind other right-back spot options. The Three Lions have great options in the latest squad announced by the manager. Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker, Reece James, and Bukayo Saka are all players who can play as wingbacks in the squad.

Since joining the Red Devils from Crystal Palace for around £50 million, Wan-Bissaka has been really impressive defensively. He won about 80 tackles in the English Premier League, 11 more than any defender, and was only dribbled by an opponent on 22 different occasions in 2019-20.

In contrast, Trent Arnold, the Liverpool star, was beaten 42 times; however, Arnold’s record-breaking 13 assists, the highest by any defender in a Premier League season, signifies the attacking prowess Southgate favors. Consequently, Chelsea’s Reece James was included for the fixtures against Belgium, Republic of Ireland, and Iceland despite having a game suspension in the UEFA Nations League.

When questioned, Southgate said it’s an area of the field where the squad is blessed. Trent and Reece have both played as wingbacks and as full backs. They are in great form, and the squad probably has more strength there than any other position.

England coach added that Bissaka is a very fine defender, especially in one on one. Southgate says he needs to consider the team balance hence choosing players that are ahead of him in that regard.
