Chelsea were favourites for the Brighton game at home and they made it count in the first half when star striker Romelu Lukaku gave them the lead. The 28th minute goal from the Belgian international off the assist from England midfielder Mason Mount was enough to give Chelsea an advantage at the half-time interval. Lukaku has now found the back of the net two times in as many Premier League games.

Brighton were the better side after the Chelsea goal for the rest of the game in the quest to get back in the game and they didn’t get their reward until the first minute of added time in the second half when England attacker Welbeck powered home a header off the cross from Seagulls left-back Marc Cucurella to ensure that his team left West London with a point at least.

The share of the points was a big blow for Chelsea who needed a win to keep in touch with league leaders Manchester City at the top of the table. The West London giants started the game with a six-point deficit to Manchester City and that has now stretched to eight points after the draw with the Seagulls, while Manchester City won their own game. The two games were played on Wednesday night.

For the Manchester City game, the Citizens beat home team Brentford 1-0 courtesy the first half strike from Phil Foden to move clear at the Premier League summit.
