Mills believes Bukayo Saka could make England squad for Euro 2021

Former Premier League ace Danny Mills believes Bukayo Saka could make the push for the England squad for next summer’s European Championships. The teenager has enjoyed a terrific breakthrough season with the Gunners this term where he has largely featured on the left side of the defence.

He has already contributed three goals and nine assists for the club and his performances have already led to suggestions that he could make the jump to the national side. Speaking on Sky Sports, Mills indicated that Saka could be one of the players to benefit from the Euros being postponed and he could possibly act as cover for Ben Chilwell in next year’s tournament.

He told: “I just feel with Bukayo Saka coming through, Ben Chilwell will probably be the first choice left back at that stage and the younger Bukayo Saka will get his chance as the back up. Things change in football. The cream always come to the top and players get injuries. If Danny Rose is still playing exceptionally next season wherever that might be, he will still be in the (England) team but I just feel with the emergence of Saka, who will play a lot next season, he will make the team possibly as the second choice.”

Saka is generally a left-back by trade but he has fared impressively from the left-back position in the absence of Sead Kolasinac and Kieran Tierney through injuries. Despite this, the youngster can’t anticipate an easy route into the Euro 2021 squad with the Three Lions, considering the likes of Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams have impressed with Manchester United while Gareth Southgate could return to Danny Rose, suppose he is able to prove himself. The Gunners graduate has less than 16 months remaining on his current deal but talks are underway over a long-term contract. Borussia Dortmund are understood to be monitoring the situation.
